It has a 12ax7 and a 6V6, it then goes into a 10 ohm load paralleled with a 1meg pot wiper out to a 150k resistor to output jack. You then run that into your amp. THis thing sounds awesome! Class-A, you can crank the master and hear the power tube get fatter and turn up the gain to get that Guess Who "American Woman" tone! Or Vanhalen type tones too! Ed, you set the hook, now pull up.... does this thing use an output transformer? is that 10 ohm load off the secondary? What wattage is the 10 ohm resistor? Is there a tube rectifier? Is there much in the way of heater noise/is the cathode of the 6V6 tied to the heaters? thanx, Jon START NEW THREAD REPLY PREVIOUS LIST Read 126 times From: Randy Jamz (ranjam@autobahn.mb.ca) Date: 7/28/2001 2:04 PM Subject: Re: Herzog to the rescue!!! If you adjust your glasses to a lower resolution, the Herzog is a Champ circuit without the Fender tone controls. Really, there isn't a much simpler circuit, so anything remotely similar can and will be called a Champ circuit. By removing the dummy load and attaching a speaker, you can play the thing as a Champ, if you'd like. There is no tube rectifier, because (as Gar himself stated) for Class A there shouldn't be sag, so why bother? The load resistor changed slightly, too. Whatever was handy got thrown in. There are two schematics floating around, and they vary the load resistor. Examples are 10 ohm @ 5 watt and 6 ohm @ 10 watt. That may have been do to better match the OPT, or it may have been done to purposely mismatch. Or it may have done because the exact value is uncritical. HI Randy, did you have a schematic for a fet version of a Champ? I know someone here posted about it a few months back, and had good results. You sound like a big Champ enthusiest. I want to build something like this into one of my bigger amps! So to switch it in and out of the front of the amp. Crazy idea, but I like the idea, if the power tranny can handle the 6V6 current draw. I have a mid 70's SFDSR. (twin) BTW do you have any more Herzog info? I love these things! I just picked up one of the RI used in excellent condition! thank you! It looked like one filament wire was tied to pin 2 of the 6v6, there is a 100 ohm 1watt from pin 2 to ground, maybe to reduce filament hum. The cathode has a 470ohm paralleled with a cap 100uf/25vdc. Also theres a 220k 1/2watt from pin 2 to pin 5. Heres one version of the schematic if its still up; http://members.home.net/fclarke/fx/herzog2.gif I would play with some of the cathode resistor/cap values to fine tune this, and go from there. This little bugger has humungous gain! You can probably take off one or both 12ax7 cathode bias caps if you need to. I would also try one of the variations of a Tweed tone control, with a defeat switch. Good luck! There maybe slight differences that won't matter much. There is missing from that posted schematic a 220pF capacitor from input jack to ground and a 220pF capacitor from grid to ground on the first stage. Lastly, there is a .003 capacitor from plate to ground on the 6V6. No biggie, that will only reduce most high frequency oscilations if the wiring layout is not the best. The tone control idea is something to try. The original didn't have one, but was voiced for a decent guitar range, with that big cap on the switch from plate to ground bleeding off a lot of highs in a similation of the 'woman tone' achieved by utilizing the guitar's tone control rolled off. Ed, Look closely, is there also another 100 ohm resistor from the octal pin 7 to ground, or further down the string on that side of the heater winding, so that there's an effective center tap on the heater winding? cya, Jon START NEW THREAD REPLY PREVIOUS LIST Read 48 times From: Ed (goforthsound@yahoo.com) Date: 7/30/2001 7:44 AM Subject: Re: Herzog to the rescue!!! Hi John, I had put it back together already, but I wrote down all the parts I saw, and I did not see another 100ohm resistor just the 1 carbon comp 1 watter there. When I get a chance, I will open it up and check again. Please email me, to remind me if I don't get back within this week please. take care, Ed
