You could wire your EF-86 like the 6SJ7 in the 5C1 Champ. In
the clone I built, that stage had plenty of gain! If you use the 5C1
preamp stage, make sure you use the coupling cap between the
grid and the input jack, if you don't there will be DC going to your
guitar!
