Hi Dave, Good to get your message. Well, I'm not so sure which post you mean in particular, I can get kind of long winded about SE amps even when there is nothing about the Champ12 ;) IIRC you have the actual Champ12 you would like to improve? The upgrades to the PCBs similar to how I did mine are an improvement, but a bench SE6L6 built from surplus junk using a much simpler circuit can easily be made to sound better in every way using the exact same tubes. The original schematic & layout I really don't like, but it does handily provide all the proper knob functions as originally set up, so I improved it the best I could within those limitations. Or maybe you want that newly designed power supply for the 350volt B+ range? I haven't combined these yet but that is what direction I would go if I was to gut the amp for a point-to-point circuit using the same chassis & OPT. Seems like just changing the power supply to this 350V type could be done to replace the separate power PCB without having to remove the main audio PCB though. I would have to study that further. Or a complete audio circuit could be installed point-to-point to replace the main board as well. Only then I have not seriously pursued what I would do about all the knobs, ideally I would want them all to perform pretty much what they originally did, but I do not have a proven point-to-point layout for the reverb, headphones, phono in, and line out, and my pseudo-channel-switching tube overdrive has not been perfected as a replacement for the stock one but I know its better at least. On the bench I concentrated more on the simple older Champ circuit with only one 12AX7, then overdrive that with pedals either transistor, opamp, or tube which I now have complimentary designs primarily to overdrive clean tube amps into their characteristic distortion. And I am really committed to old point-to-point without even any eyelet or turret board, so getting the full original amp functions would take a lot of exerimentation. Someday I might do it but so far I just seriously rewired the power supply like in my older posts to get as much from the original PT, then upgraded the quality of key parts on the main PCB with some changes in values for voicing improvements. It is much better but I am still not happy with the remaining hum even though it is reduced. The *easy* way to a whole new SE 6L6 might be to give up reverb, line out, and the phono in, maybe headphones (probably wouldn't be too hard to add the stock headphone output after the rewiring?), then put in a basic BF champ circuit (except point-to-point) to use the first 12AX7 including the bass & treble plus maybe add a mid control which would take up the unused reverb knob hole. Then use the other 12AX7 for built in switchable overdrive and use the OD gain & volume knobs as originally intended. A custom faceplate could cover unused holes for final cosmetic appearance. This would attempt to be just a better sounding version of the original using only 2 gain stages like the old champs, you would lose some functions in exchange for better tone & response, but with overdrive you would still have 3 (or 4 if you wanted them) gain stages, allowing it to still have the original capability of being a Metal player's practice amp. If only 3 gain stages were preferred, in that case it would be possible to use the extra triode for an FX loop send or return, and an original or new hole on the front or back could contain a level pot. I do have a tube FX send (or line out) that can be added to any amp without needing a tube socket since it uses a tube with solderable leads wired inside the chassis, you would still need a new or previous hole for its level pot if you want external access instead of a small internal trimpot. It should be possible to do reverb like this instead, but probably wouldn't be worth it unless there was a better reverb *tank*. Or the same chassis is very tempting to just make it a 6L6 Vibrochamp12 and just use the other 12AX7 for killer tremolo. Then you could still have a mid knob but you would use the overdrive knobs for tremolo instead, only problem is finding the reverse audio pots for the VC tremolo, I think maybe WeberVST has them now but I don't remember if a full size pot would fit in the Champ12 panel even if the PCB were removed. Could always use regular mini pots and turn counter-clockwise to increase trem functions :( This would be the more vintage or blues style amp for players who would not utilize the high-gain channel if it was there anyway. It would be ideal if you were in Houston or someplace close by in Texas or Louisiana, but maybe this could be possible. Tell me more. I am not really in the amp business but still trying to enjoy tone experiments which this SE work is really a by-product of. Do you have other amps, and what kind are they or what kind have you tried and liked a lot even if you don't own it? Also what kind of guitar(s) and playing style, and examples of artists you like the tone of. Sincerely, Mike
