Well I have been doing magnet swaps around here and just wanted to share how easy it is, But it’s only worth it if you are willing to take that chance that ya may do damage end up sending the pup in for repair anyway? Also you need other SD pups to rob magnets out of or switch, I believe I heard Seymour don’t sale magnets & that you must send them in.. So as long as your gentle and not aggressive with the pup or wires you should do fine, To me Cover removal: To me is the most scary operation …. Jagged solder edges left hanging inside the cover will rip coils if it’s raked across them, I use “Desoldering Braid” a flat braided copper wire that when heated with the iron on top of the soldered area it soaks up the solder … drag it slowly through the soldered area while keeping it hot and it will soak up that extra solder. Then I separate the cover from the pup floor plate using fingers only…sometime I cheat with a screwdriver but you’ll need to keep clear of the coils… If the pup is waxed a little heat from a blow dryer helps on top of the cover. With Cover off, Carefully remove side tape, but not the tape inside and around each bobbin. ( you just want to see the end of the magnet is all.) Loosen the 4- tiny Phillip screws (usually gold “brass”) but no need to take them out all the way ( I would never do that ) With the 4 screws back off 2- 3 turns work the bobbins and magnet up and down breaking the wax or seat. Now with tweezers or needle nose pliers start to grab the magnet and pull out … It’s not always cooperative I sometimes have to push it or give it a little nudge from the back side … problem is that where the tiny lead wires are coming off the bobbins so gentleness is a must. ~When you slide the magnet out there is a mark on the very right side of the magnet “from a felt marking pen” indicating north … when you pull it out stop don’t turn or flip the magnet … take a sharp eye on the top right corner their will be the mark the mark will be going back in the same way with all magnets ~ The Magnet goes back into the pup through that same side with out the small lead wires … The mark should be going in first on top right corner of magnet ) The mark does two things , keeps ya from flipping the magnet over or spinning it clock ways 180*. Changing phasing Magnetically is a 180* clock spin ( Peter Green Mod) Flipping it over like a coin is a no-no ( I think?) Alinco 2’s and 5’s are the same size but ceramic is bigger for these you need to flip up the wood or plastic bobbin outside supports, Or if your removing a Ceramic and replacing it with a Alnico … Lay the blocks over and they’ll be the right height for Alnico’s. My latest dream come true swap was a Local “Les Paul forum reading buddy who wanted to stick A-5’s in his Antiquity’s for that authentic PAF tone they claim they get over their?…. I had two A-5’s here we swapped… he digs the A-5’s in his once darker then normal Paul I dig the A-2’s in the once too Bright Strat-Gib that I have. My pups are (JAZZ model) ~ A-2 Mag swap 7.8k used in (Neck) (Distortion 12.7k neck model )~ A-2 mag swap used in ( Bridge) Neck is Rosewood … Strat body solid Maple … Pup spacing is custom ( It’s the same as 59’ Les Paul measured from bridge ) I was told by hundreds of Techs and on-line guitarist That I’ll never make a Strat sound like a Les Paul …. Wrong thing to tell a Mad Tone Scientist… It’s been a 1 year evolution but it flat out nails Jimmy Pages Les Paul tone on Led Zeppelin Presence CD Track 7 “Tea For One” Scott F is an Ear witness to this Strat~Gib project Scott was actually here from Texas and was able to witness the mag swap sound test first hand … Good luck with your magnet swaps its fun and if ya look hard you can find used SD pups on line $25.00 -$45.00 to switch mags with or you can always send them to Seymour? & I think its only $25.00 round trip? Enjoy Great Tone! Don Mare
